Hastings County has reviewed a request to have a dangerous highway intersection updated.
During Wednesday’s Hastings/Quinte Emergency Services Committee meeting, council reviewed a letter sent from Centre Hastings to the ministry of transportation, requesting the intersection of Highway 7 and Highway 62 be evaluated for safety concerns.
The request comes after an incident in February where an ambulance from Hastings-Quinte Paramedic Services and transport truck collided, resulting in one paramedic being airlifted to a trauma centre with life threatening injuries. Prior to that, the intersection had a history of serious accidents.
Some of the proposed measures to reduce accidents at the intersection include lowering speed limits, installing dedicated turn lanes, and enhanced traffic control measures.
The request was briefly discussed by the committee, with Centre Hastings Mayor Tom Deline saying
“What we’re really looking for there is for the ministry to actually do a proper study in that section of highway, because of the problems in the past,” said Mayor Deline. “It is the only north-south, full length highway in Eastern Ontario now, so a fair bit of traffic.”
The committee reviewed the letter, but took no other action at this time.
