Prince Edward County’s mayor has decided not to run for reelection in this year’s municipal elections.
Mayor Steve Ferguson announced his decision during an event on Wednesday morning.
He tells Quinte News that being able to secure funding for the reconstruction of County Road 49 was one of the factors in deciding it was time to move on.
“Its importance to the municipality is so significant with the amount of traffic and being a gateway into the county,” Ferguson tells Quinte News.
“It was one of several things that you know led to the decision that it’s now time to, figuratively speaking, pass the baton.”
Ferguson says that he feels he had done all that he could in the role.
“It was more motivated by the fact that I think I’ve done about as much as I can, and going through another election and another four year term with the uncertainties that may exist because of the influence of upper levels of government,” Ferguson said when asked about motivations for not seeking re-election.
“It was something that I think would probably be better dealt with by, certainly a new mayor and new council. So those were the primary motivators.”
First elected to the position of mayor in 2018, Mayor Ferguson was reelected in 2022 for a second term.
Municipal elections are set to take place in October.
