On the same day that Belleville council sent the Southeast Public Health budget request back for a review, the public health board of directors learned some positive financial news.
At its meeting on Wednesday, board members heard that the amalgamated health unit finished 2025 with an approximate surplus of $3.6 million.
The surplus was mostly attributed to one-time funding from the province as part of the amalgamation process.
The board voted to put that surplus into a reserve account for future financial sustainability.
Also on Wednesday, Belleville council asked that Southeast Public Health lower their budget increase to the city to three per cent from the requested five per cent.
