UPDATE: One person dead in fire in old Belleville

Belleville Police have confirmed that one person has died following a fire on William Street in old Belleville Thursday morning.

Police responded to the house fire in the area of Queen Street and William Street at around 5:30 a.m.

Belleville Fire and Hastings-Quinte Paramedics were on scene with firefighters working to control the fire.

Upon arrival, it was reported that individuals might still be inside the residence.

One person was removed by firefighters from the home while two others escaped on their own.

Police say two females, both 72 years old, were taken to the hospital.

The first female sustained serious injuries. The second female sustained critical injuries and has since succumbed to her injuries. The third individual was uninjured.

Belleville Police are assisting the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office with the investigation into the cause of the fire.
