Prince Edward County is encouraging residents to clear snow and ice from water meters and hydrants to assist winter water operations and keep their family safe.
County staff will shovel out hydrants after a snowfall, however, it may be several days before all hydrants are cleared. Residents are encouraged to assist, if possible, by shoveling a 1 metre radius around hydrants on or near their property.
Please ensure that remote water meter reader ports are accessible with a clear path that is free from debris (snow, ice, bushes etc.) The water meter reader port is typically located on the side of the home, often nearby the hydro meter. They are usually small black plastic ports (click here to view image).
While clearing snow, ensure that gas meters, regulators and appliance exhausts are clear of snow and ice and free of debris. Obstructed meters and exhausts can create hazards including the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The public is also advised that watermain breaks and emergency repairs occur more frequently during the winter months. When a watermain is broken, residents may see pooling of water, ice, or running/bubbling water on roads, sidewalks or lawns without an obvious cause.
