The Hastings Prince Edward Ontario Public Health Team is making progress on expanding primary care in the region.
Quinte West Council received an update on the team’s progress during Wednesday’s council meeting.
In their presentation, the team showed that they had managed to secure $4.45 million in funding in 2025 and are working to secure staff for expanded primary care using this funding. The current goal is to get over 5000 patients attached to a primary care provider across the North Hastings, Centre Hastings, and Belleville areas.
While discussing the presentation, Councillor David McCue said that the federal government should be contributing more to the project, rather than just the provincial government.
“I think the federal government should be stepping up and saying, you have a municipality where we’re sending thousands of our Armed Forces personnel. Yes, maybe we should be throwing a little bit of money behind them to help ease the pain that they’re over, overloading our doctor recruitment, our physician, our hospitals,” said Councillor McCue.
Quinte West council accepted the update, but took no action at this time.
