A new program from the Ontario government will help smaller municipalities with critical road maintenance and pothole repair.
In Tyendinaga Township on Monday, Hastings-Lennox and Addington MPP Ric Bresee announced the $10 million Pothole Prevention and Repair Program.
Municipalities with populations of up to 10,000 people can apply for funding to prevent and repair potholes.
Bresee calls the program a win for smaller municipalities across Ontario.
“It is really important that we recognize that the small municipalities have a bigger challenge when it comes to having the financial capacity to do this kind of work. And it’s such good, preventative work.”
Eligible municipalities can receive up to $38,000 for projects.
“If you can fill the cracks, if you can patch the small holes along the roads, then you prevent a lot of the big damage and you really extend the length and the lifespan of these roads.”
Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria says the funding will help small municipalities repair potholes before they cause costly vehicle damage. “In addition to this important program, our government is investing nearly $30 billion to build, repair and expand highways, roads and bridges across Ontario, connecting more communities to jobs, housing and economic opportunities.”
Applications for the Pothole Prevention and Repair Program are now open.
Eligible municipalities can apply until December 12, 2025.
