United Way Hastings & Prince Edward is reminding families that the deadline to register for the 2025 Backpacks for Success program is THIS Friday, July 11. This annual back-to-school initiative helps local students from kindergarten to grade 12 start the school year fully equipped—with confidence and the supplies they need to thrive.
Each backpack is available for just $12 per child, yet contains between $70–$95 worth of new school supplies, depending on the student’s grade level. That includes high-quality, age-appropriate items like:
- Backpacks (sized for each age group)
- Lunch bags and water bottles
- Pencil cases, pencils, pens, erasers
- Crayons, markers, or pencil crayons
- Binders, paper, math sets, and scientific calculators for older students
“Backpacks for Success is about helping families stretch their budgets without sacrificing what their kids need to succeed in school,” says Kaitlyn Lalonde, Director of Community Impact at United Way HPE. “We know this time of year can be financially stressful, and we’re proud to offer a practical way to lighten the load.”
Distribution is available in communities across Hastings and Prince Edward counties, so families do not need to travel to Belleville to pick up their backpacks. The program is designed to be accessible and convenient, especially for rural households.
Families can register online at www.unitedwayhpe.ca/backpacks or by calling 613-962-9531. Space is limited, and registration closes Friday, July 11 or while supplies last.
