Bay of Quinte MPP Tyler Allsopp was at Belleville General Hospital on Friday to announce new provincial funding for their Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Response Program.
The province is providing $236,000 in base funding to enhance the nursing staff for the program. That funding represents $96,000 for a clinical nurse team leader and the remaining $140,000 for clinical nurse team supports.
Allsopp said it’s important to keep spreading the message that intimate partner violence needs to stop.
“This will go a long way into making sure that people who are suffering from intimate partner violence or sexual assault in our community are going to get the level of care that they need,” said MPP Allsopp. “We have a long way to go in our community, and we hope that this funding helps assist in taking care of those folks.”
During the announcement, Belleville General Hospital CEO Stacey Daub said that intimate partner violence has been front and centre for their team since a nurse who worked at BGH was killed in an act of intimate partner violence in 2024.
“The domestic violence program that is run through Quinte Health serves a very wide variety of people,” said Daub. “Children, teenagers, adults over adults, so no group is exempt, and intimate partner violence and domestic violence and sexual violence actually happens across the lifespan.”
The new funding is considered base funding, and will continue on a yearly basis.
