New details have been released to Quinte News about a Belleville police officer who rescued an elderly woman from a burning building on Monday.
On Monday afternoon, an officer discovered black smoke on Purdy Street and traced the source back to a home that was engulfed in flames.
When the officer arrived, he was told an elderly woman was living in the basement and hadn’t made it out of the building. Firefighters were not on scene yet.
The officer entered the building and, through thick smoke, located the woman inside. He was able to help her exit the building safely.
Firefighters arrived shortly after and rescued a man from the same building. The man and woman, and the officer, were evaluated by paramedics, and the officer was treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation.
The Ontario Fire Marshal has started an investigation into the fire but no official cause has been released. The home was severely damaged in the fire.
