The Quinte West Official Plan has received approval from the province, with amendments which officials say are an important step forward in shaping future development and growth in the city.
This week, the city received approval of its Official Plan amendment number 21, which includes 31 provincial modifications ensuring the plan aligns with the latest Provincial Policy Statement and incorporates key changes introduced through Bill 23, the More Homes Built Faster Act, to encourage development and strengthen environmental protection.
The Official Plan guides future land use and development and supports a balanced approach to development that fosters sustainable growth while protecting the city’s natural and cultural resources.
Key areas addressed in Quinte West’s Official Plan include:
Aligning the city’s additional dwelling unit policy with provincial requirements.
Clarifying the responsibilities of municipal, provincial, and conservation authorities for protecting the environment and planning for and managing natural hazards like flooding and erosion.
Ensuring that new developments meet land-use requirements in order to minimize potential conflicts such as noise, traffic and environmental impacts.
Clarifying when and how detailed designs of a development are reviewed and approved before construction begins.
“The approval of the city’s Official Plan marks a significant milestone for Quinte West,” says Divina Aseo, policy planner. “With final approval of the amendment and its updates, the city enhances its efforts to build a more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive community.”
