With Thanksgiving coming soon, the harvest season is looking strong, according to farmer and director of District 12 Grain Farmers of Ontario, Jeff Harrison.
“Well, as always, late September brings soybean harvest in our part of the province, and the recent good weather… soybean harvest has been at a very rapid pace,” Harrison tells Quinte News.
“As the soybeans mature, more and more acres can get harvested. A very important job that farmers are doing right now as the soybeans are harvested, the planting of winter wheat is in order of the day.”
Harrison tells Quinte News that the quality of the soybeans has been good for our part of the province.
“We’ve had a very wet season, as you know, with incessant rainfall, and of course, that can sometimes bring on disease,” Harrison explained.
“But soybean quality has been good in our part of the province. Moisture has been at a reasonable level, reasonable enough that farmers can get out there and start harvesting.”
He says commodity prices are at record lows.
“Commodity prices are at record lows and soybeans, corn, wheat, the three main commodities in this province are not only at low commodity prices, but part of the problem is the expenses on our farms,” Harrison said.
“The cost of inputs on our farms is every bit as much of the problem as low commodity pricing.”
