The Ontario government has announced $1,180,000 in new funding for a marine cargo operations training program in Prince Edward County at Picton Terminals.
The funding, provided through the Skills Development Fund Training Stream, is being offered to support the Picton Terminals Bulk Cargo Safe Handling Training program in partnership with H.R. Doornekamp Construction. The program will train participants in the safe marine landside operations of cargo handling, offloading, loading of steel and bulk cargo to and from vessels.
“Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is proud to invest in programs that support training and upskilling,” said David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “This project will give people the necessary skills needed to land in-demand and well-paying jobs in their communities and help power our province.”
Picton Terminals is currently embroiled in a legal battle with Prince Edward County. The port ran into trouble after a zoning application to expand storage facilities was denied by the municipality in 2021. Recently, Prince Edward County approved draft terms of a settlement to end the dispute.
