Belleville’s Market Square was painted in pastel today as nearly 200 unicorn-horned people gathered to celebrate the beginning of Pride Month.
Bay of Quinte Pride organized the event in cooperation with 14 downtown businesses. Participants went on a scavenger hunt, searching for unicorns hidden in stores in order to qualify for a prize draw. After the hunt, participants gathered at Market Square to try and break the world record for the most people gathered wearing unicorn horns.
While 194 people were counted, the world record stands at 344.
Chair of the Quinte Pride committee, Lynn Olsen, said the event was a big success.
“Everybody here is very chill, and I do see that a lot at pride events. Everybody’s chill,” said Olsen. “Everyone’s just happy to be a part of it. They’re happy to be there. They’re having a good time, making some new friends, meeting us. We’re meeting them. It’s a good day.”
The unicorn party kicks off Pride Month celebrations in the region, with flag-raising ceremonies in Quinte West and Belleville set for Monday, and the Belleville Pride Parade coming up this Saturday.
