Stirling-Rawdon homeowners can expect another hefty tax increase.
Mayor Bob Mullin tells Quinte News that while the final budget has not been finalized he expects a tax increase of between 9% and 14%.
Mullin says the provincial government continues to not provide funding to repair provincial highways 33 and 14 in Stirling-Rawdon because they don’t connect with Highways 7, 62, or 401.
Mullin says the lack of so-called connecting-link funding is hard on local taxpayers.
“It’s killing us! We spent a million and a half dollars fixing (Hwy) 14 last year and it was just resurfacing a bridge and putting in culverts and I’ve got almost $2 million of work on it this year that we can’t afford to do.”Other rural municipalities in the area such as Tweed and Centre Hastings regularly receive connecting-link funding to repair provincial highways in their communities.
Last year taxes increased by 9.9% in Stirling-Rawdon.
