Prince Edward County is looking at new options for the future of a minor downtown street in Picton.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, Mark Rose from the Picton Business Improvement Association presented a proposal to redesign part of York Street between Main Street and Mary Street from a vehicle road to a walking corridor.
Converting the street to pedestrian traffic only was presented as an option that had many benefits, including better safe pedestrian access to Main Street from other surrounding communities and public spaces. Other proposed benefits include having the space for trees and other green installations, and increased pedestrian safety.
The proposal comes after the road was scheduled for resurfacing and roadwork in 2024.
Councillor Sam Branderhorst liked the idea of transforming the space.
“I find this super exciting,” said Councillor Branderhorst. “I actually worked for the Regent for a while and the parking lot to the Regent for staff is down that road. I believe I was the only person using that road for a long period of time in a vehicle.”
Council instructed staff to prepare a report on the proposal, with the information gathered to be presented at a future Committee of the Whole meeting.
