Hastings-Lennox and Addington Member of Parliament Shelby Kramp-Neuman says affordability was the main issue in 2023, for those in the riding and nationally.
Earlier this month, the opposition Conservatives forced a 34-hour-long voting session in parliament, which was to show non-confidence in the governing Liberals, with the carbon tax front and centre.
“With C-234, that’s the bill with regards to reducing and providing relief with regards to the carbon tax, the carbon tax is raising the cost of everything and it’s a tax that’s extremely divisive and punishing, especially for rural Canadians.”
She says although Canadians are concerned about what they are are seeing with global turmoil and war, the financial pressures at home were the main issue in H-L&A.
“There’s so many people that are buried in debt. I would go as far to say that people that I’m speaking to, people are really performing a real balancing act, and they’re reevaluating how they spend, how they save.”
Higher interest rates, the housing crunch and mortgage prices were also top of mind.
She wanted to point out that the work of the office is also of critical importance.
The daily work, the case files, applications, and concerns of local residents may not get as much media attention, but it is paramount for local residents.
” … the ability that our constituency offices and our mobile offices have been able to make on situations and case files with individual situations. Whether it’s CPP or Revenue Canada or immigration issues. There’s a lot of different personal, one-on-one cases that I’ve really been happy that we’re able to make some changes with.”
