A rezoning application has been approved for an estate winery on Loyalist Parkway in Prince Edward County.
During Wednesday’s meeting of the planning and development committee, council members heard a proposal to rezone the property at 17945 Loyalist Parkway to permit an estate winery.
Currently, the property is farmland, serving as a vineyard. The rezoning would allow new structures to be built on the property to contain both the winemaking operations, and a restaurant and tasting room.
Councillors briefly debated the proposal, with Councillor Roy Pennell voicing concerns about the future of the property if it is no longer zoned for agriculture.
“A year from now maybe somebody else buys the winery and they say, ‘I can make a lot more money,’ they’d have the right zoning for a commercial enterprise,” said Councillor Pennell.
The committee approved the rezoning of the property.
