The idea came from Bridge Street Retirement Residence Community Relations Manager Natalie Cummings after some conversations with those who run the John Howard Daytime Drop-in at Bridge Street United Church.
“So here at Bridge Street we were kind of noticing just this influx in our community of folks really down on their luck and facing this problem in our community. So through our research we have come to find that one of the most popular requested items among the homeless community is socks.”
“Some of them have been in Belleville their entire lives so they’ve really seen the homeless and unaffordable housing problem kind of grow within the community. And so a lot of them take heart in the fact there are so many young people trying to make way and they really resonated with that.”
New socks of all sizes and types can be dropped off at the residence, the Starbucks in the Metro Plaza and Value Village until December 18.
Cummings says any other businesses or organizations who would like to set up a drop box and support the initiative can contact her at Bridge Street Retirement Residence at 613-968-7449 ext. 2.
The donations will be handed out at the John Howard Drop-in at Bridge Street United Church.
