Belleville council will be asking Hastings County to open its warming centres as soon as possible and before the current set date of December 15.
Councillor Sean Kelly made the motion at Tuesday’s council meeting.
“We’ve had it before in the past, December the first, and it made sense. We get cold nights in November and let’s get it going and December 15 is, I just think it’s cruel.”
The motion would apply not only to the Belleville warming centre but to the ones in Quinte West and Bancroft as well.
Meanwhile the City of Quinte West has already asked for an earlier start date but that was turned down.
