Hastings County council is supporting the concept of a “transitional homelessness strategy” for Bancroft and area which, like other communities, is suffering from a serious homelessness issue.
At Hastings County council Thursday, Kevin Taylor described the necessity of building a community consisting of small shelters called “Little Blue Cabins.”
Taylor stressed the importance of having a community hub alongside the cabins where various services for the homeless would be provided, adding that problems with homelessness could not be easily solved.
“It’ll be 20 individuals on a goal to have a fresh start in life, all on the same goal and all walking alongside with the help from the community and
professionals.”
Taylor said he estimates the cabins and community hub would cost $1.5 million to build and hopes the land will be donated free of charge. It’s estimated the community would cost about $400,000 a year to operate.
Taylor believes a good location would be just outside urban boundaries, saying have such a facility inside a community often causes problems.
County council approved having its staff work with the Blue Cabins group to try and and find financial support.
