If you see a man walking with a dog and pushing a cart on Quinte West and Belleville roads a little later in the week what you’re seeing is part of a walk across Canada raising awareness for the need for homeless shelters that allow pets.
Homeless James Caughill and his dog Muchwah, a husky cross, started walking in 2016, taking winters off and time off during the pandemic and are now heading east, eventually ending up in St. John’s Newfoundland.
James, on welfare for years due to illness, couldn’t afford apartments and any homeless shelters wouldn’t allow pets. His walk has received a lot of attention from national media.
“So far in almost seven years we’ve got 41 shelters now taking pets that didn’t take pets…because of us.”
James and his new dog Muck have been camping in Glen Miller and after the heat wave ends will head down to Hamilton Road and West Moira Street in Belleville.
Any cash donations on the road will help pay living costs and 90% of funds raised through the sale of books (Walking through the Rockies with Muckwah) and an eventual movie deal will build three new pet-friendly homeless shelters in Toronto, Winnipeg, and Victoria.
Homeless James has published six books and a seventh is on the way and they’re being sold in several countries. A facebook page
