The Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward says a GoFundMe Campaign for a special kitten in their care is more than half way to its goal.
About $6,000 has been raised since the campaign for Cornelius began.
Cornelius was born three months ago at Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward with a cleft palate, a condition that is often fatal for kittens because they can’t latch onto their mother, and human intervention is the only way to save their life.
Milk and fluids can be misdirected to the nasal cavity, and if breathed in, the fluid enters the lungs causing pneumonia and often death.
Animal care attendants have been feeding him, day and night, by inserting a tube down his esophagus and into his stomach.
Staff at the shelter are now consulting with veterinary experts to determine how and when to repair the cleft.
Other procedures, like the insertion of a temporary feeding tube, are also being discussed.
The campaign has received almost 80 donations from individuals, groups and local businesses.
Local pet stores and restaurants, including The Pier Patio Bar and Grill and Birdy’s are also collecting money on Cornelius’ behalf.
“The response has been so heart-warming,” says Marilyn Lawrie, HSHPE executive director. “I’ve had people walk up to me with money in their hands for Cornelius. He’s really touched a lot of people.”
