On Saturday morning at roughly 10 a.m., Belleville Fire responded to a fire at Belleville Cemetery on Dundas Street West.
The fire was located at the Crematorium building, where the roof had caught fire. The Crematorium is on the southeast corner of the property.
Belleville Cemetery says that the fire was a “very small” one and had only affected an area that was patched due to a leak.
“The combustion started as a result of heat from the stack transferred through the metal sleeve, absolutely was not due to an issue with cremation,” the cemetery tells Quinte News.
They say the fire was extinguished before firefighters arrived.
Celebrations were planned to start at 11 a.m. that day for the cemetery’s 150th anniversary. The ceremony went ahead as planned.
No injuries have been reported.
The cemetery says there were no adverse effects on the crematorium and that they should be back to full operation pending an inspection from the service tech on Wednesday.
