The Golden Hawks are gearing up to host the Eastern Canada Cup hockey tournament, and with a big tournament come big expenses.
During Wednesday’s council meeting, John MacDonald from the Trenton Golden Hawks spoke to Quinte West Council about the upcoming event, and requested free ice time for the event, and a cash waiver for expenses related to the event.
The total request was for $10,000 in ice time, and $20,000 for expenses.
The event is expected to bring 30 hockey teams to the city, plus their fans to view the games. The entire event is estimated to bring $400,000 of economic activity to the city.
Councillor Duncan Armstrong said he was concerned about approving the request after the budget was set and smaller requests had previously been denied.
“My issue is that it seems very last second and our city, we already went through our budget and came up with budget figures and a lot of people went away sad,”said Councillor Armstrong. “I just have a hard time saying yes to $20,000 when we said no to much smaller amounts.”
Council remained open to the request, but did not commit to funding the event.
