The second phase of the Crystal Palace restoration is getting started with Prince Edward County Council hiring Trilith Contracting Inc. to complete the next phase of restoration on the building.
Prince Edward County Council heard a report from staff on the bid by Trilith Contracting Inc. during their Tuesday meeting.
The contractors were hired for the project with a total cost of $352,312.51. Phase two reconstruction of the building will include repair and replacement of the building’s windows, replacing any decayed wood in the structure, repainting the building’s exterior, and installing an accessible wheelchair ramp at the main entrance.
Phase one of the reconstruction of the historic building, which focused on the building’s foundation and outdoor cupola, is already complete.
Work is expected to begin later this month, and will take 10 weeks to complete.
During debate on the motion, Councillor Phil St-Jean proposed that expected budget surplus for the project be used to restore the Old Boys Entrance war memorial on the property, if any surplus remains after the completion of the phase two renovation.
Councillor St-Jean said that the war memorial needs attention, much like other structures on the property.
“This one is particularly significant when there was a publicly funded World War One Memorial so it’s very near and dear to the hearts of a lot of our Legion members, our past veterans and their families and for that matter, my own family, my father being somebody who served as well,” said Councillor St-Jean
The bid by Trilith Contracting is under budget, and the surplus was originally planned to be used as a contingency fund in case of unexpected expenses.
The amendment passed after brief debate, and the motion to hire the contractors was passed as amended.
