Belleville police responded to 72 calls for service over a 24-hour period from 5 a.m. on April 27, 2023 to 5 a.m. on April 28, 2023.
Warrants
On April 27, 2023 around 7 p.m., a 31-year-old Belleville man was spotted near the downtown core who was known to have an outstanding warrant issued by the Ontario Provincial Police. When officers attempted to arrest the male, he took off on foot. Following a brief chase, he was apprehended and later in the evening turned over to the OPP.
Impaired drivers
Belleville police extend a thank you to the public for helping get a couple of potential impaired drivers off the road earlier this week.
The first call came in from staff at a local fast food restaurant shortly after 6 a.m. on April 27. The employees were concerned due to the smell of alcohol emanating from a vehicle after serving a female customer who pulled through the drive-thru. When officers arrived, the woman was in her vehicle passed out in the parking lot. A beer can was observed inside the cup holder of the vehicle as well. The female refused a demand for a sample of her breath for analysis and was subsequently arrested. Charged with refusing a breath demand is Candice Valyear, 40, of Quinte West. She was released with a court date of May 15, 2023.
In the second incidnent, around noon, police were called by a motorist who was following a vehicle on Coleman Street that was ‘all over the road’ as it headed north towards Moira Street. The vehicle pulled into the parking lot of a local business where officers caught up to the male driver who was still in the vehicle. Charged with impaired driving is Alexander Robertson, 28, of Belleville. He was released with a court date of May 18, 2023.
