Prince Edward County Council is seeking a friendship agreement with a community in Ukraine.
Council has directed municipal staff to reach out to the Ukrainian city of Kraslyiv to form the symbolic agreement.
The rural community of Kraslyiv is located in western Ukraine, about halfway between the capital city of Kyiv, and the major western city of Lviv, near the Polish border.
Ukraine remains locked in a deadly war with its eastern neighbor, Russia, which invaded their eastern provinces over a year ago in 2022. Russia had previously annexed the Crimea peninsula on the Black Sea from Ukraine in 2014.
Councillor Roberts spoke in support of Ukraine after proposing the motion.
“Showing support in this way it makes a clear statement that Prince Edward County, if only in a modest way, opposes Putin’s bleak vision,” said Councillor Roberts.
Prince Edward County has shown solidarity with Ukraine in other ways before, including flying the Ukrainian flag.
The motion was approved unanimously.
