Eastern Ontario municipalities are coming together to build a case to restore commuter Train 651.
The City of Belleville, as well as Hastings County, Northumberland County, Quinte West, and the City of Kingston, are asking for community support by filling out a short survey.
The municipalities say the train is a vital link that connects our region to the GTA.
VIA Rail’s Train 651 serviced the Kingston-to-Toronto corridor, helping bring workers to jobs in the GTA, along with other riders.
“The province is reopening and people are returning to the office. With the rising cost of fuel, and environmental sustainability a growing concern, there is a critical need for regional transit options,”
said Belleville Mayor Mitch Panciuk in a release.
“As we plan for the liveable, competitive, and sustainable communities of the future, Eastern Ontario needs VIA Rail Train 651 restored. We encourage residents to help us build the case for this service by completing our brief survey about the need and opportunity for commuter train services for the Kingston-to-Toronto corridor.” Mayor Panciuk continued.
The train was cancelled due to a drop in ridership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
