A detailed plan for the future of public transit in Belleville is in the works. At Monday’s meeting, city council approved $160,000 for an Operational Review of the city’s transit system.
After a record 1.1 million riders, previous to COVID-19, the number of passengers is climbing again and with the city’s increasing population, council believes a roadmap for improving and expanding the service is needed right now.
Council approved consultants HDR Inc. to create the plan. Belleville Transit is also exploring ways to move away from diesel-powered to electric buses.
Meanwhile, council approved the low tender from Cooney Excavating of $3.6 million plus tax to reconstruct Albion Street and Albion Way.
