It appears the City of Belleville’s warming centre will return to a familiar location this winter.
At this Monday’s meeting, City Council will be asked to approve the use of the former Belleville Police Service building on Dundas Street East as the warming centre for the 2022-23 season.
Council will also be asked to absolve Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Hastings from any liability claims that may arise from the building being used as a warming centre.
The city has donated the land the building sits on to Habitat PEH for a large affordable housing project.
In a letter to council, Habitat officials asked the organization be indemnified against any future claims and that the legal transfer of the property be delayed to the end of April 2023 to allow the warming centre to operate for the coming year.
The warming centre, which operated out of the former police station in 2020-21, will be run in partnership with Hastings County.
