With building activity still booming in several municipalities, Centre Hastings is no different.
Mayor Tom Deline says building activity has been steadily increasing since 2019.
“Last year was quite a little bit bigger than 2020 and certainly better than twice of ’19. But this year here is just tremendous. We’re almost double where we were last year at this time.”
Through the end of May, there had been more than $10.2 million worth of construction activity, compared to $5.3 million last year.
Much of that activity has been new single family dwellings.
Deline says there are three subdivisions developing in the Madoc area.
“Two are in the process, they’re actually being developed now and one is pretty well ready to go. So that’s a fair number of units, first. Now that’s in the urban centre with services. But a lot of these as well are rural land severances, you know, minimum two acre lots, stuff like that.”
Deline says the number of rural homes being built actually outnumbers those in town.
There are a lot of people moving to the community from areas like Toronto and Peterborough.
He would like to see some rental units being built to give the older population looking to downsize a way to stay in the community.
