For the NDP candidate running in Hastings-Lennox and Addington riding the campaign is all about making life better for average people.
Appearing on CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show Wednesday, Eric DePoe says he sees a lot of people in his work and life seems to be getting tougher.
DePoe says that has a lot to do with past decisions by both the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives.
“So the decisions that they made about stopping raises in the minimum wage, decisions that they made about cutting healthcare and cutting education, this is making life worse and less liveable for people in Ontario.”
DePoe said NDP provincial government would work to hire more PSWs, nurses and family doctors along with more teachers.
He says the money to train and hire more people will come from an increase in taxes on those earning $200,000 or more while there would be a tax freeze on those earning less than $200,000.
DePoe also says we’re in an era of an expanding economy.
“So there are going to be a lot more government revenues coming in from that expanding economy so there will be more money to pay for services.”
Social media and online presence in other ways are big parts in any election campaign these days but Depoe says getting out there and knocking on doors is most important and basic way to campaign.
“I think face to face is the best way to meet voters and the best way for them to get the measure of you and for you to get the measure of what their concerns are.”
DePoe says he’s met thousands of people as he’s campaigned in Hastings-Lennox and Addington, a very large riding stretching from Maynooth south to Napanee.
DePoe operates a paralegal practice in Napanee and represents injured workers. Previously he ran a tea room for 17 years in Yarker.
