Up to 150 Canadian Forces personnel will be heading to Poland in coming days with a focus on helping desperate Ukrainians fleeing the brutal
invasion by Russia.
Speaking at 8 Wing Trenton Thursday the Minister of National Defence Anita Anand said up to 150 personnel with 100 going very soon would
be deployed at various Polish refugee reception centres. Most of the personnel will be from Kingston and Edmonton will be transported to Poland
from 8 Wing.
The Force’s members will help with immediate care and processing of refugees and will be the main focus of the new Canadian contingent in Poland.
Some of the Canadians will also be involved in a Polish-led humanitarian task force working with over 100 multinational agencies dealing with the Ukrainians.
Another group will liaise with the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship helping to resettle thousands of refugees in Canada.
Anand pointed to half a billion dollars in the recently released federal budget set aside to help refugees and $8 billion in future spending to beef up
the Canadian military and the communications/security establishment.
“The world seems a less safe place than it was 2 years ago, never mind 2 months ago. Canadians and our forces will continue to step up, not only to help Ukraine
win the war, but to offer a safe haven and to welcome with open arms the people of Ukraine, our friends.”
