Hastings Prince Edward Public Health is investigating increased reports of drug overdoses in the region.
Public Health is aware of approximately five drug-related overdoses over the past three to four weeks, three of them fatal.
It is likely that there are many more overdoses occurring across the region that have not been reported because the individuals did not seek medical attention.
Public Health officials say they, along with local partners, are investigating what may be contributing to the increased overdoses but a jump in numbers is often the result of new and/or toxic drugs being introduced to the area.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ethan Toumishey encourages anyone using drugs to take steps to reduce their risk including never using alone and having at least one naloxone kit on hand.
It’s also suggested not to mix drugs and to try only a small amount first.
Hastings Prince Edward Public Health offers support for those seeking help for themselves or others through its website on its Getting Help page.
Their website also lists locations where free naloxone kits are available.
Individuals who witness an overdose in the community can report the event to HPEPH, by completing the anonymous online Overdose Reporting tool.
Information is provided to Public Health Nurses to help ensure harm reduction services are available to those who need them most.
