An organization representing about 260 Quinte region landlords believes the provincial government needs a “deep rethink” on rent controls.
After a freeze on rents last year the province is allowing rents to increase by 1.2% this year, a figure well below the 5% inflation rate.
In a press release the Quinte Region Landlords Association says many landlords are struggling to pay their bills and leaving the industry which could lead to even fewer rental units being available.
The Association says strict rent controls and other regulations will not encourage more rental units and instead work to keep rents high.
The landlord’s group, also says the amount of money provided to people through its social programs has barely increased in 20 years and hasn’t come close to keeping up with inflation.
