Efforts continue by educators with the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board to improve its elementary students’ reading skills.
A recent survey of almost 600 kindergarten to grade 6 students showed an average of only 38% of them meeting age-level reading benchmarks.
The school board has authorized a multi-faceted approach to improve literacy including a focus on phonics, various diagnostic tools, and a consistent set of teaching and learning resources beginning in kindergarten.
