Belleville council has taken note of a major cause of multiple deaths in a New York City high rise apartment building fire earlier this month.
The fire, which killed 17 people, including eight children, occurred January 9.
A big reason so many people lost their lives in the blaze was that an apartment’s door where the fire started was left open along with an exit door allowing smoke to fill much of the building.
Monday, Belleville council supported a motion from the City of Kitchener that the Ontario Fire Code be amended to require self-closing devices on all doors in low rise apartment buildings.
