Members of the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board will see an update on a report later today (Monday) which guides decisions on repairs to schools, additions to schools, new school builds, and school closures over the next few years.
The Capital and Accommodations Plan projects enrolment numbers to increase 4% over the next 10 years in elementary schools and 7% in secondary schools.
However despite the increases, it’s predicted there will be a total of around 3,500 surplus spaces in elementary and secondary schools by the year 2030.
The average age of the board’s elementary schools is 58 years and 66 years for secondary schools and a few of them require almost as much money invested in repairs over the next five years as it would cost to replace the school.
The consultant’s report estimates the board needs over $200 million over the next five years for repairs and upgrades.
The detailed report can be found starting on page 25 on the school board’s agenda package.
