Lennox and Addington OPP are warning of a scam circulating in the area aimed at soliciting financial information.
Police say victims have been contacted by fraudsters claiming to be with their financial institution, law enforcement or an online merchant.
They claim there have been suspicious charges on victims’ credit cards or online accounts then state they need your credit card information to cancel the purchase.
Reports also indicate scammers will tell victims that they’ll send the victim a deposit for them to send money overseas as part of the fake investigation but will not actually send the deposit, leaving victims losing their money.
Police are warning not to give out financial information over the phone unless you are absolutely certain the call is legitimate, not to allow remote access to personal computers, and to always verify with your financial institution before giving out information.
