Representatives of The City of Belleville have announced that the current ice conditions in Victoria Harbour are not safe for people.
A press release Thursday said that ice thickness tests conducted since the ice began to form in the harbour have certified that it is not safe and as a result signs have been posted.
It said city staff use guidelines from Infrastructure Health and Safety Association Best Practices for Building and Working Safely on Ice Covers in Ontario, which specifies that ice must be at least four inches thick to be safe for people to walk on, to make the determination.
City staff are asking that residents stay away from the ice until such a time that tests conclude it is safe at which time the public will be notified and allowed to enjoy the ice.
