The multi-million dollar cleanup of the former Deloro Mine site continues to await some final work.
The provincial government is awaiting some engineering work on the final design before moving ahead with the final design. Assistant Director with the Ministry of Environment Kate Faaren tells Quinte News the project is 75% complete and the water has “significantly improved.”
Faaren indicates engineering work for the next year is underway.
“After that’s done we’ll know how long it’s going to take to finish but in terms of the areas to be cleaned up and the waste that’s contained, we’re 75% compete.”
Faaren says, “We’ve seen a dramatic improvement in surface water quality. The water quality has significantly improved in response to the remediation.”
“We’ve seen a dramatic improvement in surface water quality. We’re not to our objective yet. We’re not to where we want to be but it has improved by over 90% in response to the remediation.”
The village has a municipal well for its water use.
Deloro was one of Ontario’s first gold mines, and the first producer of arsenic in North America.
