Belleville Police are making the public aware of a scam circulating in the area.
Police say that the latest scam will see victims receive a phone call from someone claiming to be with the Canadian Border Security Agency, threatening to arrest or deport them if they do not follow instructions.
Victims are told to go to a location in the city that has a bitcoin ATM and to deposit a large sum of money to be converted into the cryptocurrency and forwarded to the scammer’s account.
Police say that sometimes scammers will request payment via gift cards or wire money transfers as well.
They advise anyone receiving such a call to hang up immediately and to report it to police.
