The City of Belleville is looking at the long term future of Meyers Pier.
That’s both structurally and how the 115-year-old pier fits into the city’s overall plans.
The pier has been closed to vehicular traffic in an effort to protect it.
City of Belleville CAO Rod Bovay says due to its age, the structure underneath is deteriorating quickly.
“Council has asked us to proceed with undertaking an environmental assessment to look at, you know, what we do with the pier in terms of, you know, do we repair it, do we replace it, do we remove it altogether? We’ll look at all options.”
Bovay says it will be a multi-year process during which there will be plenty of public consultation.
“There has to be under the provincial environmental assessment process. There’s numerous mandatory points of public contact so there’ll be lots of opportunity for people to provide their input on what they’d like to see in the pier area, not just the pier itself but in the general area there.”
