The Wellington Dukes dropped an exciting back and forth game to the Cobourg Cougars in overtime Saturday night.
On the second game in two nights Wellington travelled to Cobourg for the evening bout coming off a 4-1 win Friday over Mississauga.
Despite a power play opportunity half way through the first period for the Dukes, neither team was able to find the back of the net.
It wasn’t until just under five minutes into the second period that Wellington broke the deadlock when Payton Schaly scored on the power play with assists from Jonathan Balah and Emmet Pierce to put the Dukes up 1-0.
Despite two more Cobourg penalties in the frame Wellington was unable to capitalize and took the lead into the third.
Just 20 seconds into the third period Cobourg tied the game when forward Jacob Gilbert scored.
Around six minutes later Payton Schaly struck for the Dukes again to bring the score to 2-1 and five minutes after that Balah scored a power play marker when Cobourg forward Andy Reist took a tripping penalty.
With under ten minutes to go and a 3-1 lead, Dukes defenceman Cole McGuire sent the Cougars to the power play when he took a roughing penalty.
Cobourg capitalized on the opportunity with just 15 seconds left on the power play with a goal from George Krotiris to bring the game to 3-2.
In the dying minutes of the game and down a goal the Cougars pressed on and it paid off when forward Tai York scored on a solo effort to knot the game at three, which would be the score at the end of regulation.
An ill-advised too many men penalty on Wellington just under three minutes into the extra frame would prove to be fatal as the Cougars took full advantage with forward Jacob Gilbert scoring his second of the game to win it.
Wellington finished the night 2-5 on the power play and goaltender Matt Dunsmoor stopped 33 of 37 shots faced on the evening in the loss.
A bright spot in the loss for Wellington was forward Payton Schaly who managed three points, two goals and an assist.
Wellington is back home next Friday playing host to the Haliburton County Huskies at 7:30 p.m.
