The Conservative Candidate for Hastings-Lennox and Addington says she’s prepared to use her past experience to do as much as she can for the riding, in Ottawa, if she’s elected.
Shelby Kramp-Neuman comes from a local political family and joins the race with four terms worth of experience on Centre Hastings Council, along with time spent as a teacher, working as a staffer on Parliament Hill and for foreign affairs.
Speaking on CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show on Thursday morning Kramp-Neuman says, while she might be a rookie in Ottawa if elected, she’s going to follow her father’s lead of working for the riding and not just toeing the party line.
“I certainly have a backbone, after 15 years on municipal government I’ve learned to speak up for myself. I’ve assured Mr. O’Toole that I won’t be a wallflower, he will know who I am and he’ll certainly hear from me when I’m looking out for the constituents. You have to be able to speak and show the need, and have some compassionate reasoning about why things should come to Hastings-Lennox and Addington.”
Kramp-Neuman says “there’s an attitude of entitlement with the current federal government” and she won’t stand for it.
When asked about the list of scandals that have plagued the current Liberal Government, she says more needs to be done to deter unethical behaviour by politicians.
“We have to avoid issues like that by requiring that all meetings by corporations and organizations be reported, and we have to ban any lobbying on something that is subject to criminal proceedings. I pride myself on my word, and my ethics, and my accountability, and this is one of the main reasons for me to me run right now.”
She was also asked about potential changes to federal firearms regulations, saying she will always support common-sense gun policies that keep firearms out of the hands of dangerous people.
Kramp-Neuman told one caller that the focus should be on deterring crime and stopping illegal guns from getting into the country, not taking guns away from responsible gun owners.
“We need to restore mandatory minimum sentences that keep violent gang members off the streets and we really need to focus on smuggling operations before illegal firearms even reach the border. The legitimacy of private ownership of firearms will resist any domestic or international pressure to the contrary and the acts that have no public safety value have to be reviewed.”
Kramp-Neuman also gave her thoughts on homelessness, the COVID-19 response, her thoughts on various other social issues and more.
