Media Release: Eligible Youth Invited to Book Second Doses of COVID-19 Vaccine at Earlier Interval
Hastings and Prince Edward Counties/July 5, 2021 – Beginning today, youth in HPEPH are eligible to book an appointment for their second dose of COVID-19 as early as four weeks after their first dose. Getting fully vaccinated as soon as possible is essential to achieve the greatest possible protection against COVID-19. Getting a second dose before the end of summer will also help contribute to safe in-person learning in September.
How can youth book a second dose appointment?
HPEPH recognizes that scheduling appointments over the summer months can be challenging, and encourages youth/caregivers to book a second dose appointment as soon as possible, at a clinic date that works for their family. In our region, youth can book a second dose appointment:
- Through the provincial booking system at Ontario.ca/bookvaccine or by calling 1-833-943-3900.
- Through special clinics advertised through HPEPH’s local booking site from time to time
- At local pharmacies
- In certain primary care settings that may be offering the Pfizer vaccine (check with your primary care provider)
Why is it important to get fully vaccinated?
COVID-19 vaccine is safe, important, and it works. Evidence shows that when fully vaccinated, COVID-19 vaccines are up to 95% effective. If you’re ever exposed to the COVID-19 virus, being vaccinated will allow your immune system to fight the virus faster and more efficiently so that you’re less likely to get sick. Making a choice to get vaccinated not only protects you – it will help protect those you love from the risk of serious illness, hospitalization, and even death related to COVID-19. While some minor side effects (such as fatigue, headache, sore arm) are normal, serious side effects related to the vaccine, including myocarditis and pericarditis, are very rare. More information about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for youth is available at hpePublicHealth.ca/covid-19-vaccines/. If you have questions after reading this information, please talk to an adult you can trust. If parents and caregivers have questions, please consult with your primary care provider.
Still waiting for your first dose?
Youth who have not yet received their first dose are encouraged to book an appointment as soon as possible using any of the options listed above. Individuals aged 12-17 are also invited to receive their first dose of COVID-19 vaccination at a clinic offering walk-in first dose appointments to youth. A list of these clinics is available at hpePublicHealth.ca/vaccine-booking/
