Quinte West council is throwing its support behind a resolution from the City of Brantford to request that the prohibition on golf be withdrawn by the province.
Amid Ontario’s latest lockdown and stay-at-home order, golfing has been prohibited everywhere by the provincial government.
At Monday night’s council meeting, the resolution from the City of Brantford came before council seeking support in requesting that the provincial government allow golf courses to reopen.
Councillor Michael Kotsovos said he’d been planning on bringing up a similar motion at the meeting and explained the important role that golf plays in community life.
“The game of golf supports mental health and well-being over multiple generations so teens and seniors alike can all participate in this sport. Furthermore, golf is often the largest fundraising driver for a lot of the vulnerable population. That said, these tournaments generate the majority of the charitable dollars that go to help these organizations. I just think we need to have a stronger look at why golf is important and bringing it back.”
Council agreed and voted to put their support behind the resolution from the City of Brantford.
