The Special Investigations Unit says there are no reasonable grounds to charge a Lennox and Addington OPP officer after a man suffered serious injuries during an arrest in August of last year.
The incident happened on August 3, 2020 when police tried to arrest the man for an alleged assault at a home in Tamworth.
The suspect fought back against police at that time and was tasered during the scuffle, but was able to continue to run away, eventually being taken into custody by four officers.
The 52-year-old man then complained about soreness and shortness of breath, and was taken to the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital in Napanee where he was diagnosed with multiple rib and facial fractures.
In his report, SIU Director Joseph Martino says the ‘evidence suggests that the complainant was struck with knees and punches to various parts of his body which, though significant, were not disproportionate to the spiritedness with which he fought the officers.’
