Hastings County’s finance, property and personnel committee is recommending that county council deny a request to be involved with the construction of an energy-from waste-facility.
If built, the proposed $200 million regional facility would incinerate combustible waste collected from Hastings County, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland, Peterborough and Prince Edward Counties, and in turn generate revenue from the heat and electricity produced from that burning.
A $200,000 feasibility study would still need to be completed, with Hastings County being on the hook for about $18,000 of that, but Warden Rick Phillips says there wasn’t much appetite from member municipalities to get involved.
“There was one municipality that thought it would be a good idea. Most of the rest, due to their proximity to where the facility would be especially in the northern part of the county, nobody was intersted in proceeding with that right now.”
While the committee has recommend denying the proposal, Hastings County Council will still have to make that official at an upcoming meeting.
